2012 Toyota Prius Overview
What's New for 2012:
⢠Model line expands to include an all-new Prius c 5-door hatchback
⢠All-new Prius Plug-in Hybrid on sale in first quarter of 2012
⢠New infotainment systems, including Entune
⢠Updated styling of regular Prius, including front-seat and rear-seat refinements
Exterior Features
The new 2012 Toyota Prius c reflects what the company calls a ''youthful'' design, with extensive aerodynamic features the company says guarantee a 0.28 coefficient of drag. The Prius c is 19 inches shorter and 500 pounds lighter than the standard Prius, according to Toyota data. Meanwhile, the tweaked styling of the 2012 Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid includes a new front fascia and bumper, as well as updated headlamps and tail lamps. The Prius v is a completely new, more spacious addition to the four-member Prius family.
Interior Features
The design of the 2012 Toyota Prius c has optimized interior space with strategic placement of key drivetrain components, the company explains. Base trims of the regular Prius include fabric seats; a multi-information display to track fuel economy and other functions; and an Entune connectivity system on higher trim levels. The Prius v offers 34.3 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the rear seats.
Optional Features
Feature content greatly expands with four step-up trim levels in all versions of the 2012 Toyota Prius. The Solar Roof package, available in regular Prius models, includes a solar-powered ventilation system. The top-of-the-line version Prius offers an accident-avoidance system and premium infotainment package, plus 17-inch alloy wheels, headlamps with cleaners, and more.
Under the Hood
The 2012 Toyota Prius c features a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 73 horsepower, as well as a 60-horsepower electric motor. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid substitutes a lithium-ion battery pack for the model's standard nickel-metal hydride pack, which will allow true EV operation and performance for up to 15 miles at speeds up to 62 mph, according to Toyota, along with quick home charging using a standard AC outlet and 15-amp dedicated circuit. Regular Prius and Prius v models run on a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 98 horsepower and an 80-horsepower electric motor.
Fuel Economy
Manufacturer-reported fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Toyota Prius are:
⢠Prius c: 53/46/50 mpg (city/highway/combined)
⢠Prius Plug-in Hybrid: manufacturer-expected 87 mpg equivalent operating in EV mode and an estimated 49 mpg in hybrid mode
⢠Prius v: 44/40/42 mpg (city/highway/combined)
Safety
The 2012 Toyota Prius c comes standard with nine air bags and a suite of accident-avoidance features, including traction control. Standard equipment on the regular Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid includes front-seat and rear-seat side curtain air bags. A radar cruise-control system is an available option. Electronic tire pressure monitoring is standard on Prius v. In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2012 Toyota Prius received 5 (out of 5) stars overall. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Prius was a Top Safety Pick. Neither organization has yet tested the 2012 Prius c, v, or Plug-in Hybrid.
